Behind this piece
Sozni embroidery belongs to Kashmir's most disciplined needle traditions, practised for centuries by karigars who inherit the craft through family lineage. The name derives from the Persian word for needle, and the technique demands a single fine needle drawing silk thread through fabric in long, patient strokes to create forms that read identically on both sides. Here, that precision traces maple leaves across alabaster crepe silk, a motif rooted in the valley's love of the chinar tree. Each leaf is built stitch by stitch, governed by geometry and memory rather than a printed guide.
How to style
Wear this fabric stitched into a straight-cut kameez with wide-leg palazzos in ivory georgette for an autumn wedding reception. Add a single strand of Kashmiri moonstone beads and kolhapuri flats in natural leather to keep the palette clean. For a formal evening, pair a fitted anarkali silhouette with low gold juttis and a zardozi-edged dupatta in ecru. Office occasion: a tailored kurta over slim cigarette trousers in warm beige, finished with silver chandelier earrings and a structured clutch. Let the embroidery speak without competition.
Fabric & care
Pure crepe silk is woven with a tight twist that gives it a subtly pebbled surface; that twist can distort permanently under heat or aggressive handling. Dry-clean this fabric for the first wash, then hand-wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, gently pressing rather than wringing. Do not expose it to direct sunlight while drying, as silk oxidises and yellows with prolonged UV contact. Store the garment folded in a soft muslin cloth, never on a wire hanger. Air it gently between wearings to preserve the hand of the silk.
