Behind this piece
The phiran is Kashmir's most intimate garment, a loose, floor-grazing robe worn through winters that settle into bone and stone alike. This one is worked in aari embroidery, a chain-stitch technique executed with a hooked needle called the aari, traditionally practised by artisan families in the villages around Srinagar. The phool bail motif, a continuous flowering tendril, belongs to a vocabulary of design refined over centuries under Mughal patronage. Woven from pure Kashmiri wool, the agate-gray ground gives the ivory-and-earth threadwork room to speak without competition.
How to style
Wear it over a fine ivory kurta and slim churidar for a winter literary evening or an intimate family gathering at dusk. For a more considered daytime look, layer it over a merino turtleneck in undyed ecru with flat Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. To dress it toward a festive occasion, anchor the gray wool with a silk pashmina stole in dusty rose and add silver filigree earrings from Odisha. In each reading, the phiran does the work; the rest simply keeps pace.
Fabric & care
Pure wool breathes but does not forgive carelessness. Hand wash in cold water with a gentle wool-specific cleanser, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Press out water by rolling the phiran in a clean cotton towel. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows undyed wool over time. Steam lightly with a pressing cloth to revive the pile. Store folded in a cotton muslin bag with a cedar block to discourage moths. Treated well, pure wool deepens in character across many winters.
