Description

There is something quietly ceremonial about a length of velvet twisted into a knot. This necklace belongs to a tradition older than metallurgy in Indian adornment: the use of richly textured fabric as jewellery in its own right. Deep, close-pile velvet is knotted into a rope silhouette that holds its shape without stiffness, the knot itself acting as the centrepiece rather than a pendant or stone. The surface drinks light rather than reflecting it, which gives the piece a warmth that polished metal rarely achieves. At seventeen inches (approximately 43 cm) in length, the rope sits at the base of the throat in that precise zone between choker and collarbone necklace. A sterling silver closure anchors each end, the cool metal a considered counterpoint to the velvet's softness. The whole piece weighs just five grams, making it one of the lightest things one can place around the neck with full intention. Wear it over a raw-silk kurta in ivory or blush for a festive lunch where you wish to appear considered rather than costumed. It also reads beautifully with a fine-wool midi dress in winter, the velvet echoing the fabric's texture in a way that metal jewellery simply cannot. Free size suits almost every adult neck comfortably, and the sterling closure is smooth enough for daily fastening. Velvet requires only that it be kept away from moisture and stored flat, and it will hold its depth of colour through many seasons of use.
