Cast or pressed into the form of a tortoise, this cord necklace belongs to a lineage of amulet jewellery that stretches from coastal Tamil Nadu to the riverine craft towns of Bengal, where the tortoise is revered as a symbol of longevity, stability and quiet good fortune. The pendant carries the characteristic domed shell, detailed with segmented patterning that catches light without demanding it. Suspended on an adjustable braided cord, the piece weighs a gentle 16 grams and sits close to the collarbone, the cord accommodating a range of necklines with ease.
