Description

There are textiles that carry an entire landscape within their weave, and Sambalpuri fabric is one of them. Woven on handlooms in the Sambalpur region of Odisha, this fabric is known for its resist-dyed ikat patterns, where colour and motif are set into the yarn before a single thread is interlaced. The necklace takes that tradition and gives it architectural form: a long silhouette extending to twenty-one inches (53.3 cm) overall, with a dramatic front pendant drop of ten and a half inches (26.7 cm). The base is cut from MDF, allowing the Sambalpuri cloth to be stretched and fixed across a structured form that holds its geometry without stiffness. Scattered stone studs punctuate the surface, catching light against the matte warmth of the woven ground. The earrings, measuring one inch by one inch (2.5 cm by 2.5 cm), repeat the same fabric and stone detailing, compact and considered. The whole set weighs just under twenty-five grams, sitting lightly on the body. Wear it over a plain silk or cotton kurta in ivory or deep indigo, where the ikat patterning can speak without competition. It reads equally well at a literary evening or a curated craft bazaar, over a simple handloom sari in a complementary colour. The adjustable chain accommodates different necklines without alteration. The MDF backing keeps the pendant flat and prevents it from curling at the edges, even through a long day of wear.
