Description

There is a particular quality of moonlight that Jaipur's Kundan karigars seem to have studied for centuries, and it lives in this crescent. Shaped into a sweeping floral arc, the earring traces a broad half-moon silhouette, three and a quarter inches tall and one and three-quarter inches wide (approximately 8.3 cm by 4.4 cm), weighted with the quiet authority of forty-nine grams. The base is worked in brass, a metal long favoured in Rajasthani ornament for the warmth it lends to coloured stones. Across the crescent's face, stones are set by the Kundan method: each gem pressed into a foil-backed seat and held firm by refined gold-tinted alloy, without prongs, without distraction. The result is an unbroken field of colour and light, punctuated by floral motifs that echo the garden imagery woven through Mughal and Rajput decorative traditions alike. The surface carries the particular luminosity that only hand-laid Kundan can achieve. Wear these with a silk tissue lehenga at a winter wedding reception, letting the arc of the earring echo the embroidered hem. They are equally compelling against the plain neckline of a handloom Banarasi sari at an evening celebration, where the crescent silhouette becomes the sole ornament the eye needs. At forty-nine grams, the earrings carry presence without punishing the wearer. The free-size fitting is standard and widely comfortable, and the brass construction ensures the stones remain secure through an evening's wear.
