Description

There is a quietness to silver that coral and turquoise know how to fill. This necklace works in the idiom of the tribal and folk traditions of Rajasthan, where sterling silver has long been shaped into bold, wearable ornament. The piece carries the characteristic weight of serious silverwork: fifty-one grams of metal, cold and considered in the hand. Coral, warm and terracotta-red, and turquoise, in its dusty, mineral blue, are set against the silver in a manner that suggests the flat, deliberate stone-setting seen in the craft workshops of Bikaner and the surrounding desert towns. The stones are not precious in the commercial sense, yet they carry centuries of symbolic meaning in Indian adornment, coral for warmth and protection, turquoise for the sky and the open horizon. The silver itself has the sober, matte-leaning character that the necklace's own title claims: no high polish, no theatrical shine, simply honest metal doing honest work. Wear it with a white or ivory cotton kurta in the daytime and let the coral read against plain fabric. For an evening occasion, pair it with a deep indigo or slate-grey chanderi sari, where the muted tones of turquoise and silver settle rather than compete. The necklace measures nineteen inches (approximately forty-eight centimetres) in length, sitting comfortably at the collarbone on most frames. Free-sized by nature, it closes cleanly and is well-suited to daily wear as much as to considered dressing.
