Description
There is a quietness to silver that gold rarely permits, and this necklace understands that completely. Rajasthan's village silversmiths have long worked in a vernacular distinct from the court jewellery of Jaipur's havelis. Here, the grammar is simpler and all the more powerful for it: a graduated series of hand-formed sterling discs, each one bearing its own slight irregularity, evidence of the hammer rather than the machine. The discs are linked and layered so that they catch light at shifting angles, their surface carrying the warm, slightly oxidised patina that village silver acquires through careful finishing rather than chemical shortcut. At sixty-five and a half grams, the weight is substantial enough to settle with authority across the collarbone, the piece measuring sixteen and a half inches (approximately forty-two centimetres) in length, a proportion that sits precisely at the throat without crowding it. Wear it over an ivory chanderi kurta for a dinner where restraint reads as confidence, or layer it against a block-printed cotton dress for an afternoon gathering where the silver's earthy patina answers the indigo without competing. Both occasions ask only that the neckline remain open and uncluttered. The sterling silver construction means the necklace is suited to daily wear with minimal care. A soft cloth restores its sheen between outings. Free-sized and fastened with a secure clasp, it accommodates most neck sizes without adjustment. A single piece, unhurried and entirely itself.
