Description

There is a particular warmth that only coral carries, the kind that seems to hold sunlight inside itself. Sponge coral, prized across India's jewellery traditions from the ateliers of Jaipur to the coastal workshops of Nagercoil, has long been set as a cabochon for the way its surface drinks in light without demanding it. This single piece, offered at its own unhurried pace, measures forty-two millimetres in height and twenty-one millimetres in width, and weighs a substantial ten grams, enough presence to anchor a neckline without heaviness. The cabochon cut, smooth and domed, is the traditional choice for sponge coral precisely because it honours the stone's natural texture and the branching, porous grain that distinguishes it from smoother varieties. The colour, a deep terracotta-coral, is the shade that Rajasthani craftsmen have always paired with uncut Polki and oxidised silver, trusting the stone to carry the composition. Worn as the centrepiece of a simple gold-filled chain, it suits an ivory chanderi kurta at a mehendi as readily as it completes a sari blouse for a festive winter lunch. Set against oxidised silver findings, it reads equally well with a raw-silk jacket and churidar for a gallery opening. This is a free-size piece, meaning it adapts to the setting or mounting you already own. At ten grams, it sits close and still against the skin, neither tilting nor pulling. The smooth cabochon finish requires no special care beyond gentle wiping, making it a quietly practical choice for daily wear.
