Description

There is a quietness to silver that gold rarely permits. This necklace belongs to a tradition of tribal and folk jewellery that has long favoured sterling silver as its ground: dense, cool-toned, carrying light differently from precious metals without competing with it. Set into the oxidised sterling frame are cabochon corals, warm and slightly matte, and rounds of turquoise in that particular dusty blue-green the stone produces when sourced in its natural, uncoated form. The motifs suggest a geometric sensibility closer to Rajasthani folk forms than to courtly Jadau or Kundan work, the kind of neckpiece a silversmith in Jaipur or Bikaner might produce for a woman who wants presence without ceremony. The silver itself is sterling standard, and at 34.5 grams it carries real weight on the collarbone, the heft of genuine craft rather than hollow construction. The length runs 19.7 inches (approximately 50 centimetres), sitting at or just below the base of the throat. Wear it over a handloom cotton kurta in ivory or slate for a considered daytime gathering; it reads equally well layered against a raw silk blouse at a winter wedding, where its muted palette does not compete with a heavily worked sari. This is a free-size piece with a standard clasp closure, and that 50-centimetre length flatters most necklines without adjustment. Sterling silver develops a gentle patina with wear; a soft cloth restores its original finish in minutes.
