Description

There are prayers that take the form of silver, and this is one of them. Rooted in the devotional grammar of South Indian temple jewellery, this necklace carries two of the tradition's most sacred presences: Shri Padmanabha, the reclining Vishnu of Thiruvananthapuram, and Lakshmi Ji, rendered in the pendant and the linked deity motifs that constitute its central strand. The piece is wrought entirely in sterling silver, worked in the manner of Nagercoil and Thanjavur craftsmen who have long translated sanctum iconography into wearable devotion. Repousse-formed deity medallions, fine granulated borders and oxidised detailing give the surface its characteristic antique depth, echoing the votive jewellery once commissioned for temple corridors and royal courts. At two hundred and forty-nine grams, it settles with the considered weight of a genuine heirloom, the strand running to twenty-nine inches (approximately seventy-four centimetres) in length. Wear it over a Kanjivaram silk at a Vaishnavite festival or a family wedding where tradition is worn without apology. It reads equally well against the ivory drape of a Kerala kasavu sari for Onam, where the silver's cool tone finds its ideal foil. The necklace is finished in a single free size that suits most necklines, the length ensuring it rests well below the collarbone without crowding the décolletage. Sterling silver of this quality asks only for gentle hand-polishing with a soft cloth; the oxidised recesses are best left untouched to preserve their depth.
