Description
There is a particular stillness to uncut stones, and this set holds it well. Polki work belongs to a tradition refined over centuries in the ateliers of Rajasthan, where artisans learned to set flat, unfaceted diamond slices in open-backed mounts so that candlelight, or daylight, could pass through and animate the stone from within. Here, that grammar is translated into round-cut Polki stones laid across a brass foundation, a metal long favoured in folk and festive jewellery for its warmth and its willingness to carry ornate surface work without apology. The necklace runs to approximately 9.2 inches, or 23.4 centimetres, along an adjustable dori that allows for a relaxed or closer fit at the collarbone. The earrings measure 1.5 inches, or 3.8 centimetres, in height and 0.3 inches, or roughly 0.8 centimetres, across, a slender drop that reads as considered rather than restrained. The full set weighs 40 grams, present on the body without being burdensome. Worn with an ivory or deep teal chanderi kurta for a festive lunch, the set lends the outfit an antique formality. Paired with a silk blouse and a cotton or linen sari for a winter wedding, it reads as heirloom rather than occasion-wear. The adjustable dori removes the guesswork of length entirely. Brass requires only occasional gentle cleaning to retain its lustre. At this scale and weight, the set is practical enough for an afternoon reception and considered enough for an evening ceremony.
