Description
There are courts that never truly dissolved, and this necklace carries their memory. Set in brass worked to the exacting standard of Jaipur's Rajwadi tradition, the piece unites two of the subcontinent's most demanding crafts: Kundan, in which refined wax and lac form the invisible bed that holds each flat-cut stone in its gold-foiled seat, and Meenakari, the art of firing vitreous colour into engraved metal so that it glows from within rather than merely sitting on the surface. The reverse of a well-made Meenakari piece is often as intricate as its face, and the karigars of Jaipur treat it accordingly. Here, pearl drops suspend from the central pendant, softening the geometry with their quiet lustre. The choker pendant measures approximately 8 centimetres long and 7.5 centimetres wide; the pendant itself hangs 3.2 inches (8.1 cm) long. The full set weighs 159 grams, a substance that confirms the density of the stone-setting work beneath. Wear the necklace over a deep-toned silk anarkali for a winter wedding reception, or layer it against a raw-silk ivory kurta where the Meenakari colour does all the conversational work. The earrings, each 2.5 inches (6.3 cm) long and 1.7 inches (4.3 cm) wide, balance the scale of the pendant without competing. The choker measures 12 inches (30.5 cm) with an adjustable chain to suit different necklines. Brass construction keeps the weight honest and the price within reach of a considered, unhurried wardrobe.
