Description

There are jhumkas that announce themselves, and there are those that simply arrive, already at home against the ear. This piece belongs to the Kundan tradition that reached its finest expression in the ateliers of Jaipur, where setting uncut stones in a bed of refined gold foil became a form of devotion as much as decoration. Here, the foil work is laid over brass, a metal with good weight and warm undertone, and into it are pressed pale pink stones whose colour sits somewhere between rose quartz and the blush of old gulabi enamel. The jhumka silhouette is classical: a domed, layered crown narrowing into the characteristic bell, which at its base gives way to suspended pearl drops, their soft lustre providing a counterpoint to the harder brilliance of the Kundan settings. At three inches tall (approximately 7.5 cm) and one inch wide (approximately 2.5 cm), with a total weight of fifty-five grams, these earrings carry a presence the wearer will feel pleasantly throughout the day. Pair them with a pale ivory or blush organza saree for a shaadi function where you wish to be quietly memorable rather than loud. They are equally sympathetic to a Banarasi silk kurta at a festive mehendi or holud gathering. The free-size hook or post closure suits most ear configurations without adjustment. Brass holds its form well over time; a soft, dry cloth after wearing keeps the Kundan bed bright and the pearl drops luminous.
