Description
There are shrines in South India where the goddess wears exactly this weight of gold, and certain karigars in Nagercoil have spent generations learning to say the same thing in brass. This necklace set belongs to the temple jewellery tradition, where devotional motifs, layered pendants and a strong architectural presence take precedence over delicacy. The central pendant, measuring two inches in height and two inches in width (approximately five by five centimetres), carries the dense, frontal quality of a temple plaque: repousse-worked brass with a warmly oxidised finish that reads as antique gold at any distance. The earrings, at two and a quarter inches tall and three-quarters of an inch wide (roughly five point seven by one point nine centimetres), mirror the pendant's silhouette and move with satisfying weight. An adjustable dori brings the necklace to eight inches (approximately twenty centimetres) at its shortest, allowing placement high on the collarbone or lower on the chest. Wear this set with a silk Kanjeevaram for a wedding morning ritual, or pair it with a handloom cotton kurta and a simple bun for a museum opening where the piece deserves to be noticed without competing with anything else around it. The free-size dori accommodates most necklines and requires no clasp manipulation. Brass holds its finish well when kept away from moisture; a soft cloth buffs the surface back to its warm, burnished tone.
