Description

There are garments that need no ornamentation, and then there are silhouettes that seem to wait for something like this. The kamar bandh is one of the oldest expressions of Indian adornment, a belt conceived not for utility but for ceremony, worn low across the waist to define and celebrate the form beneath. This piece, rendered in multicolour, draws on a tradition most closely associated with the ateliers of Rajasthan, where craftsmen set vivid stones, glass, or lac-filled cabochons into elaborate floral and foliate frameworks to produce pieces of festive density. The palette shifts across its width, suggesting the layered colour work characteristic of meenakari-influenced jewellery, where each hue carries its own weight against an oxidised or gilded base metal ground. At 27.5 inches in length (approximately 69.8 cm) and 2.4 inches wide (approximately 6.1 cm), the belt has genuine presence, and at just under 199 grams, it sits with satisfying substance at the waist. Wear it cinched over a tissue silk saree for a sangeet, where its multicolour play will answer the shimmer of the fabric, or layered over a sharara at a mehendi, knotted at the hip to let the ends fall forward. Free size and designed to be tied rather than clasped, it accommodates most waist measurements with ease. The finish holds well against an evening of dancing, and the width means it lies flat without buckling or shifting throughout wear.
