Description

There is a particular lightness that only wood carries, and this necklace has known it all along. Threaded across a generous forty-inch length (approximately 102 centimetres), three strands of painted and lacquered wooden beads fall in layered loops that move with the body rather than against it. The multicolour palette draws on a folk sensibility found across India's bead-working traditions, from the painted wooden crafts of Rajasthan to the lacquerware markets of Varanasi, where artisans coat turned wood in layers of pigment and seal it with a burnished finish that resists fading. Each bead is hand-sized and rounded, its colour sitting between terracotta, ochre, forest green and cream, giving the strand an almost painterly quality. At ninety-five grams, the necklace has genuine presence without burden, the weight distributed evenly across all three loops. Worn over a handloom cotton kurta in natural ivory, the colours announce themselves with quiet confidence. At a daytime brunch or an art-gallery evening, this piece pairs equally well with a block-printed linen dress, where the earthy tones echo the print's vegetable dyes and ground the whole look. Free size by design, the forty-inch drop means the necklace sits well below the collarbone, draping naturally against the chest whether worn as a single layered loop or separated. The lacquered finish requires no special care beyond avoiding prolonged moisture, and the sturdy threading holds the strands in easy alignment through daily wear.
