Description

There is a particular joy in wearing something rooted in the earth. Carved and turned from wood, this long floral necklace belongs to a folk tradition of beaded adornment that has long flourished in artisan pockets across India, where natural materials are shaped and strung with the same care given to gold. Each bead carries a floral motif rendered in multicolour, the hues layered and painted to suggest petals in bloom. The palette is vivid without being garish, the kind of considered colour play one associates with the hand-painted craft objects of Rajasthan and Bengal alike. At 63.78 grams, the necklace has real presence without heaviness, and its 28 inches (71 centimetres) of length mean it falls well past the collarbone, draping generously across the chest in a long, relaxed silhouette. Wood, as a material, carries warmth in a way that metal rarely does. Wear it over a white cotton kurta on a languid Sunday and it reads as art worn close to the body. Layer it over a block-printed silk dress for an evening gathering where you wish to arrive lightly and be remembered. This is a free-size piece and the length, at 28 inches (71 centimetres), suits most frames. The beads are strung for everyday ease, light enough for long wear, and the natural wood finish requires only gentle storage away from moisture to keep its colour vivid.
