Description

There is a quietness to silver that gold never quite achieves. These sterling silver ball earrings distil that quietness into its most elemental form: a perfect sphere, eight millimetres in diameter, finished in a soft, light-absorbing matt that refuses to shout. The matt finish is achieved by brushing the surface of the silver to interrupt its natural reflectivity, leaving behind a texture that feels almost chalky to the eye, almost warm to the touch. The spherical form itself belongs to a long tradition of Indian silver work, where the artisans of Rajasthan and Bengal have long understood the ball as a complete thought, a shape that requires no embellishment to hold its own. Sterling silver, known for its purity and its cool, quiet weight, is the only sensible metal for a form this restrained. Wear these with a hand-woven cotton kurta in undyed ivory or raw silk in slate, and they disappear beautifully into the fabric of an everyday afternoon. For an evening occasion, pair them against a Kanjivaram border in dark teal, where the muted silver catches the weave without competing with it. Each piece is free-sized, as earrings with stud or drop-post fittings naturally are. The matt surface resists the small scratches and fingerprints that plagued polished silver, making these genuinely suited to daily wear. Sold as a pair, priced at Rs 3,090, they ask very little and offer a great deal of considered calm.
