Description

There are foreheads that a ornament chooses, and then there is the mathapatti. Worn at the centre parting and falling in graduated chains toward the brow, the mathapatti is one of the oldest forms of bridal adornment in India, tracing its lineage through the workshops of Rajasthan and the temple-jewellery traditions of the south. This piece is worked in brass, a metal with deep roots in devotional and folk jewellery, its warm, burnished gold tone ageing beautifully with wear. The silhouette is architectural: a central pendant motif anchored at the maang, with fanning chains that settle against the hairline in a gentle cascade. The weight, at 114 grams, gives the piece the satisfying presence of something made to be felt as well as seen. The brass has been finished to catch the light without harshness, reading close to antique gold in natural light. For a wedding sangeet or a mehendi ceremony, this pairs with a deep red or ivory silk lehenga and unset silver jhumkas that allow the mathapatti to command the face entirely. On a quieter celebratory occasion, wear it with a handwoven Banarasi dupatta draped over the head, letting the chains disappear into the weave. One size fits all head sizes, as the adjustable chain closure at the back accommodates a range of parting lengths and hairline shapes. Brass requires only a soft cloth to restore its lustre; avoid prolonged contact with water and store flat to preserve the chain alignment.
