Description

There are stones that carry the night sky inside them, and lapis lazuli is one. Cut from the deep Afghani blue that has coloured royalty's adornments since antiquity, these earrings set vivid lapis cabochons within sterling silver frames whose oxidised detailing draws out the gold pyrite flecks scattered naturally through the stone. The work belongs to a tradition of silver jewellery-making long practised across Rajasthan and the artisan quarters of Jaipur, where silversmiths have shaped this particular pairing of lapis and oxidised metal into something that reads as simultaneously ancient and spare. Each earring stands two inches tall (approximately five centimetres), and at ten grams the pair carries a satisfying, considered weight without pulling at the lobe. The silver is sterling throughout, and the finish has been allowed to settle into its patina rather than being polished to a mirror shine, which gives the surface a softness entirely in keeping with the stone's own depth. Wear them with a handwoven Chanderi kurta in ivory or cream for evening gatherings, where the blue reads almost like indigo in candlelight. They are equally composed against a silk sari in rust or terracotta, the lapis offering cool counterpoint to warm-toned drapes. The free-size hook closure suits most ears comfortably, and the oxidised silver requires only occasional buffing with a soft cloth. A thoughtful everyday piece that rewards being worn often.
