Description

A kalagi is not merely an ornament; it is a declaration, worn by kings at their temples and brides at their foreheads, now offered to those who understand the weight of that history. This piece is cast in brass and worked in the Kundan tradition, where a bed of lac supports each stone, and the setting is pressed and burnished by hand until the foil catches light from within. The kalagi silhouette, a plume-shaped brooch form that once pinned aigrettes to royal turbans and bridal dupattas, is rendered here at a generous four inches in height and four and a half inches in width, approximately ten by eleven and a half centimetres, with a settled weight of fifty-eight grams that gives it genuine presence. Cascading from its lower edge, a fringe of vivid green bead drops carries the spirit of Rajasthan's bazaars, where Jaipur's karigars have long paired cold mineral greens with warm gilded settings to dramatic effect. The brass base, finished to a warm antique gold tone, holds the Kundan stones in their characteristic flat-faced settings. Pin it to the gathered folds of a ivory silk dupatta at a winter wedding, or use it to anchor the drape of a deep jewel-toned sari at a formal evening reception. Either way, the kalagi reads as a considered flourish rather than an afterthought. The free-size brooch-style mount suits most fabrics without snagging. At fifty-eight grams, it rests with authority but not discomfort, making it practical for a full evening of wear.
