Description
The moon has always been an occasion for ornament. This chandbali earring is shaped after the crescent, that oldest of feminine symbols, worked here in the Kundan tradition that Jaipur's goldsmiths carried to its highest expression. A brass base, carefully lacquered and layered, receives each stone in the Kundan method: foil-backed glass or semi-precious stones pressed into a gold-toned setting of refined lac, then bordered all around by a descending fringe of seed pearls that catch light the way dew does at the edge of a leaf. The silhouette is full and generous, measuring three and a quarter inches tall by one point seven inches wide (approximately 8.3 cm by 4.3 cm), and the piece weighs a confident forty-five grams, with a presence that reads clearly across a room. Nothing here is incidental; the crescent form, the stone placements, the pearl drop border, each element earns its position. Wear these with a tissue-silk Banarasi at a winter wedding, where the ivory pearls answer the shimmer of zari without competing with it. They sit equally well over a velvet blouse at a sangeet, grounding the drama of the occasion with something genuinely considered. Because the setting is Kundan rather than cast, the weight is distributed evenly across the ear. The free-size hook suits most piercings. The brass base keeps the price honest while the lacquered finish protects the stones through a long evening of celebration.
