Description

There are earrings that simply hang, and then there are earrings that hold a conversation. The chandbali, that crescent born of Mughal courts and refined across generations in the ateliers of Jaipur, finds its fullest expression here in Kundan work. Against a brass base finished to a warm, burnished tone, flat-cut Kundan stones are set in the traditional manner: each piece pressed into a gold-foil-lined cell by hand, relying on the setting's own tension to hold the stone with no prong and no compromise. The jhumka bell drops from the crescent in the way it always should, generously, with confidence, and strands of pearls extend below it, softening the geometry into something closer to movement than jewellery. At three and a quarter inches in height (approximately 8.3 cm) and one and a quarter inches in width (approximately 3.2 cm), and weighing 51 grams together, these are earrings that arrive with presence. Wear them with a raw-silk kurta and chanderi dupatta for a festive afternoon, or let them be the single deliberate statement over an ivory cotton kurta at an engagement. They ask very little of the rest of your dressing. Free-sized with a standard post-and-hook closure suited to most ears, these earrings require no special care beyond keeping them away from moisture and storing them flat. The brass base gives them durability without the brittleness of lighter alloys, ensuring they hold their form and finish across many seasons of wearing.
