Description

There are textiles that carry an entire geography within their weave, and Sambalpuri fabric is one of them. Woven in the ikat tradition of Odisha's Sambalpur region, this handloom fabric is distinguished by its resist-dyed geometric and floral motifs, where the pattern is set into the thread before the loom ever begins its work. Here, that same cloth is cut and mounted onto MDF backing to create a structured choker and earring set whose weight, a light 19 grams for the complete set, belies how considered its construction is. The choker measures 12.5 inches (approximately 31.75 cm) in length including its adjustable fastening, with a face height of 1.25 inches (approximately 3.17 cm). The earrings match at 1.25 inches (approximately 3.17 cm) tall and 1.1 inches (approximately 2.79 cm) wide, finished with slender dangling beads that give the set its gentle movement. Wear it with a handwoven cotton kurta in ivory or indigo for an afternoon gathering, or pair it against a silk blouse beneath a Banarasi saree to let two great Indian textile traditions share the same silhouette. The ikat geometry reads as quietly commanding in both settings. The adjustable necklace suits most necklines without alteration.
