Description

Silence, rendered in silver thread. Tarakasi, the ancient filigree craft of Odisha, reaches its fullest expression in these earrings: fine sterling silver wire drawn to hairline thinness, then coiled, twisted and soldered by hand into a blooming flower form that holds more air than metal. The tradition, centred in Cuttack for centuries, demands that every petal and every curling tendril be shaped without a mould, guided only by the karigar's eye and patience. Here, that patience produces a floral silhouette of quiet intricacy, each layer of scrollwork nesting within the next, the whole composition left in sterling's natural bright finish so that the wirework reads with full clarity against the skin. Measuring approximately five and a half centimetres in height and two and three quarter centimetres in width, and weighing just under seventeen grams for the pair, they carry with surprising lightness. Wear them with a fine Chanderi silk kurta in ivory or pale gold for a literary festival or a festive lunch; or let them anchor the simplicity of a crisp cotton sari at a gallery opening or a puja morning where restraint is its own ornament. The free-size fitting suits most ears comfortably, and the sterling silver construction requires only occasional gentle polishing with a soft cloth to maintain its lustre. The open filigree structure keeps the earrings airy enough for hours of wear, and the sober floral motif moves as naturally between heirloom ceremony and quiet daily elegance.
