Description
Odisha's oldest breath of silver, made visible. Cuttack has kept the art of Tarakasi alive for centuries, drawing fine sterling silver wire into webs so intricate they seem spun rather than wrought. These earrings are shaped as an open flower, its petals built entirely from coiled and twisted filaments soldered together without a sheet-metal base, so light passes clean through the design. The technique demands a karigar who works with wire finer than thread, bending each loop by hand before fusing it to its neighbour. The result is a drop silhouette that measures six-tenths of a centimetre wide and just over six centimetres tall (2.4 inches by 0.3 inches), weighing a gentle 7.68 grams in sterling silver. No stone interrupts the lacework; the metal itself is the ornament, its surface carrying a soft natural sheen that belongs wholly to handmade silver. Wear them with a fine Chanderi kurta at a literary evening, where the filigree reads as quiet erudition. They carry equal grace alongside a Bengali tant saree at a family celebration, the openwork catching candlelight without competing with heavier jewellery at the throat. The earrings are free-sized and require no adjustment. Sterling silver wears well with consistent care: a soft cloth buff after wearing preserves the sheen. The slender width ensures they sit close to the face, comfortable for long wear, and light enough to forget you have them on.
