Description

She arrives as benediction: Goddess Lakshmi rendered in the devotional grammar of South Indian temple jewellery, small enough to rest against the wrist or throat, weighted with intention. Temple jewellery traces its lineage to the devadasi tradition of Tamil Nadu, where metal icons of deities were fashioned as wearable prayer. This piece carries that sensibility forward in miniature. The Lakshmi motif, measuring one inch (approximately 2.5 cm) in height, is worked in metal with the characteristic oxidised or antiqued finish associated with temple craft, where the deity's face and ornamental surround are pressed and cast rather than hand-pierced. Colourful beads and wound thread extend from the central medallion, recalling the bright silk and seed-bead work of Nagercoil and Kumbakonam artisans who string festive rakhis and votive jewellery for religious occasions. The total length runs to fourteen inches (approximately 35.5 cm), and the whole piece weighs a spare three grams, so it sits with genuine lightness. Wear it knotted at the wrist on Raksha Bandhan, paired with a silk cotton saree in ochre or brick red. It translates equally well tied at the throat over a simple white kurta during Diwali pujas or temple visits, where its devotional character reads as both ornament and offering. Free-sized and thread-fastened, it adjusts with ease across wrist and wrist circumferences. The metal centrepiece requires no special care beyond keeping it away from moisture, ensuring the finish and thread remain vivid across many seasons of wearing.
