Description

There is something about opal that has always resisted description, shifting colour the moment you think you have named it. This tennis bracelet is set in sterling silver, each certified natural opal held in a clean four-prong collet that keeps the stone forward-facing and unobstructed. The opals are arranged in a single continuous line, the classic tennis silhouette that places all emphasis on the stones themselves rather than the metalwork around them. Sterling silver, with its cool blue-white tone, is a considered choice here: it neither competes with nor dulls the opal's internal play of colour, that phenomenon gemologists call adularescence, where greens, blues and rose shift against the light as the bracelet moves. The tradition of setting natural opals in silver rather than gold is a long one in Indian fine jewellery, particularly in Rajasthani and Gujarati workshops where the contrast between pale metal and iridescent stone has always been understood intuitively. Worn against a cream or ivory kurta at a daytime mehendi, the bracelet becomes its own quiet spectacle. Equally, it crosses easily into an evening setting, layered against the wrist alongside fine gold bangles at a reception. The bracelet measures eight inches, approximately twenty centimetres, and is offered as a free-size piece, suitable for most adult wrists. It weighs fourteen grams, giving it the satisfying presence of a well-made ornament without any sense of bulk. A box clasp secures the fit cleanly throughout the day.
