Description

She arrives laden with lotuses, flanked by peacocks, and the brass remembers every prayer ever offered at a South Indian threshold. This set belongs to the temple jewellery tradition whose heartland runs from Nagercoil through the pilgrimage towns of Tamil Nadu, where the deity's ornaments were first translated into wearable form for devadasis and classical dancers. The central panel, approximately 8.1 cm wide and just over 8 cm tall, is worked in brass that has been cast and finished to carry Goddess Lakshmi in high relief, her peacock attendants fanning out on either side in the characteristic symmetrical grammar of temple craft. Bead drops hang beneath, weighted and deliberate, the kind of detail a karigar considers long before a customer ever sees them. The earrings, roughly 5.6 cm in height and 2.8 cm across, repeat the peacock motif at a scale made for the face. The set weighs a generous 174 grams, a weight that signals substance rather than ceremony. Wear it over a raw silk Kanjivaram for a Navratri puja, or let it anchor a plain ivory linen kurta at a wedding sangeet, where it will do the speaking for you. The necklace fastens on an adjustable dori, accommodating most necklines without alteration. The brass finish is warm rather than bright, sitting closer to antique gold in tone, and requires only a soft cloth to maintain its character between occasions.
