Description

There is a geometry to the high plateaus that no cartographer has ever quite captured, and these earrings hold a fragment of it. Worked in sterling silver, each piece is built around a disciplined grid of inlaid Tibetan turquoise and coral, the stones set flush within clean angular frames that recall the architectural ornament of monastery doorways and woven thangka borders. The turquoise here is the dusty, veined variety prized across the Himalayan trade routes, its muted blue-green deepened by proximity to the warm terracotta of the coral. The silver itself is finished to a slight oxidised tone, which throws the geometric linework into relief and prevents the piece from reading as merely decorative. Each earring measures six and a half centimetres in height by just over one centimetre in width (2.5 inches by 0.5 inches), and at sixteen grams for the pair, the weight is present and grounding without being heavy. Wear them with a handwoven Kutchi shawl draped over a raw-silk kurta for a winter evening gathering, or pair them against a simple off-white linen tunic at a gallery opening, where the contrast of aged silver against pale cloth says everything without announcing itself. The free-size hook closure sits securely without pulling, and the slender width means the earrings fall close to the jaw rather than swinging wide. They are robust enough for daily wear and considered enough for occasions that ask for something with a history.
