Description

There is a geometry to grace, and this mathapatti traces it in gold-toned brass and cool, captured light. The piece belongs to the Kundan tradition, that patient Rajasthani art of pressing uncut or foiled stones into a bed of refined lac and sealing them flush with fine gold foil, achieving a surface that neither prong nor bezel could rival. Here, the technique is applied across a structured lattice of repeating geometric forms, each cell cradling a stone set in the characteristic flat-faced, luminous manner that Jaipur's artisans have refined over centuries. The brass base lends the piece a warm, autumnal undertone, and at thirty-seven grams it carries enough presence to announce itself without burdening the wearer. The cascade extends twelve inches, approximately thirty-one centimetres, across the crown, spanning the forehead with considered proportion. Wear this mathapatti with a deep-toned silk Banarasi for a wedding mehendi or a Diwali gathering where the geometry of the jewel answers the geometry of a brocade border. It translates equally well over a hand-block printed chanderi anarkali, the restraint of the fabric allowing the Kundan facets to hold the light alone. The piece is free-sized, the chain adjusted at the back to sit comfortably across varied hairlines. The brass construction resists the everyday fragility of thinner metals, and the Kundan setting, when kept from moisture, retains its flat brilliance season after season.
