Description

There are necklaces that catalogue the cosmos, and this is one of them. The Navaratna tradition holds that nine gemstones, each aligned with a celestial body, when worn together, bring the wearer into harmony with the heavens. Here, that ancient belief is rendered in sterling silver and hand-selected beads: ruby, pearl, coral, emerald, sapphire, yellow sapphire, hessonite, cat's eye and diamond-substitute arranged in the classical sequence recognised across Hindu, Jain and astrological practice alike. The beads are strung with quiet precision, their varied colours, deep reds, creamy whites, warm corals, cool blues and greens, reading as a graduated spectrum rather than a jumble. At approximately 30.5 centimetres in length and weighing a considered 36.8 grams, the necklace sits at the collarbone with gentle authority, the sterling silver findings lending a cool, refined finish to the warm tonal range of the stones. Wear it over a silk-cotton kurta in ivory or turmeric for a festive afternoon puja, where the Navaratna colours carry their own ceremonial weight. It is equally composed against a deep jewel-toned chiffon saree blouse at a wedding reception, the beads catching candlelight as a single, coherent strand. Sized to fit most necklines, with a secure sterling silver clasp, this piece asks for little maintenance beyond keeping it away from moisture and perfume. The 36.8 gram weight distributes evenly, so it rests comfortably across a full day of wearing.
