Description

There are birds that carry gods, and this is one of them. Garuda, the celestial vahana of Vishnu, has been rendered in silver across the devotional craft traditions of South India for centuries. This sterling silver bead honours that lineage. Cast with enough weight to hold its form proudly, the piece measures 46 mm in height and 50 mm in width, and sits at a substantial 20 grams, giving it the presence of a focal pendant rather than a mere accent. The silhouette is architectural: wings spread in ceremonial authority, the body compact and assured. Sterling silver here carries a surface finish that reads as antique rather than polished, consistent with the temple jewellery sensibility practised across Nagercoil and the Coromandel workshops, where silver beads of this scale have long served both devotional and ornamental purposes. The motif belongs to a visual vocabulary that pre-dates Mughal influence, rooted instead in Dravidian iconography. Wear this as the centrepiece on a long oxidised silver chain with a Kanjivaram silk saree in deep teal, or thread it onto a waxed cord against an ivory cotton kurta for a considered, understated look at a cultural gathering or art opening. Sold individually, this is a free-size bead suited to most stringing configurations. The sterling silver construction is durable enough for regular wear, and the weight of 20 grams ensures the piece hangs with quiet authority rather than shifting restlessly throughout the day.
