Description

There is a grammar to floral ornament in India that predates written record, and this mathapatti speaks it fluently. Fashioned in brass and finished to a warm golden tone, the piece is shaped as a graduated arc of floral and leaf motifs that follow the natural curve of the hairline. Each bloom is rendered with a precision that recalls the flat-worked ornamental vocabulary of Rajasthani headpieces, where the forehead is treated as a canvas as considered as the throat or wrist. Brass, long the metal of temple offerings and festive adornment across traditions from Bengal to the Deccan, carries warmth without pretension. At roughly 11.7 inches in length (approximately 29.7 cm) and 0.7 inches wide (approximately 1.8 cm), the tiara is proportioned for a single clean statement across the centre of the forehead, sitting lightly at just 44 grams. Wear it with a silk Banarasi or a tissue-weave lehenga for a wedding festivity, where it will hold its own against heavier Kundan or Polki sets without competing. For a mehendi or haldi ceremony it pairs beautifully with mirror-embroidered ghagra in ochre or deep rose, the brass picking up the warmth in both fabric and light. The free-size construction means it adjusts to most head circumferences without alteration. The brass is finished to resist tarnishing through regular wear, and the piece stores well flat, requiring no special maintenance beyond a soft dry cloth.
