Description

Tanzanite holds light the way twilight holds colour: briefly, brilliantly, and all at once. This sterling silver necklace centres on a faceted tanzanite that shifts between violet and deep indigo depending on the hour and the angle. The stone is set in a clean silver mount, its facets cut to draw out the gem's natural pleochroism, that quality of appearing almost blue in one light and richly purple in another. Tanzanite, found only in the foothills of Kilimanjaro yet long beloved by Indian jewellers for its rarity and chromatic depth, carries a restrained glamour that suits the silversmith's hand particularly well. The sterling silver setting keeps the piece cool in tone and honest in weight, sitting at ten grams and falling at a length of twenty and a half inches (approximately 52 centimetres), long enough to rest just below the collarbone. Wear it with a silk georgette saree in midnight blue or charcoal for a formal evening, and the stone reads almost ceremonial. For a contemporary pairing, let it fall over a fine ivory linen kurta, where the violet catches the eye without demanding the room. The free-size chain requires no adjustment and suits most necklines without alteration. At ten grams, the piece is light enough for extended wear through a full afternoon or evening, and sterling silver, when kept dry and stored carefully, holds its finish with dependable longevity.
