Description

There are stones that hold light the way still water holds the sky. Ethiopian opal arrives in jewellery with a quality unlike almost any other gemstone. Within its pale, translucent body, flashes of coral, violet and sea-green shift with every movement, as though a small fire has been caught and polished into a teardrop. Here, a single opal cabochon is set in sterling silver, its silhouette a clean elongated drop, slender at the top and gently widening below. The silver mount is kept deliberately spare, allowing the stone to speak without interruption. At roughly 4.17 grams for the pair, the earrings carry almost no perceptible weight at the ear. The drop measures approximately 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in height and just 0.2 inches (0.5 cm) across, making the silhouette narrow and refined rather than bold. Worn casually, they brighten a cotton kurta in ivory or blush, the opal's shifting colour reading differently in morning light and candlelight. For an evening occasion, they sit beautifully alongside a silk sari in muted grey or sage, where the stone's natural iridescence does the work of adornment without competing with embroidery. Sterling silver keeps its integrity against the skin and does not cause irritation, making these a sensible choice for daily wear. The drop hook closure is simple and secure, slipping in and out without fuss, and the slender profile means they move freely without snagging on hair or fabric.
