Description

There are stones that hold light the way a quiet room holds memory. Ethiopian opal is one of them. Found in the volcanic highlands of Wollo Province, these opals carry a particular quality of fire, shifting between amber, copper and soft spectral blues depending on the light that falls on them. In this pair of stud earrings, a neat horizontal row of Ethiopian opals is set directly into sterling silver, each stone claw-held or bezel-nestled to let the play-of-colour breathe. The sterling silver itself is kept clean and unadorned, its cooler white tone offering the perfect foil for the warm, molten quality of the stones. While the setting belongs to no single regional Indian tradition, it speaks the same language as the fine lapidary sensibility of Jaipur, where stones are chosen for their inner life as much as their surface beauty. The earrings measure roughly one and a quarter centimetres in height by a fraction of a centimetre in width, and weigh just under three grams for the pair. Wear them with a silk kurta in ivory or ochre, where the opal's ember tones respond to warm fabric. They are equally at home with a fine cotton sari on a winter afternoon, or paired with a clean crew-neck for a meeting where you wish to say something without raising your voice. The free-size post-and-butterfly closure sits flush and secure against the lobe. Light enough for daily wear, considered enough for an evening.
