Description

There are pieces that carry an entire season of colour in less than a gram of metal. This rakhi centres on a Meenakari peacock rendered in vitreous enamel, the bird's fan of tail feathers filled with the saturated blues, greens and turquoises that Jaipur's enamel workshops have refined over centuries. Meenakari, the art of fusing pigmented glass onto a metal surface through careful firing, demands that the karigar lay each colour field with precision before the kiln seals it permanently into place. Here the technique is applied to a compact peacock form measuring just 0.75 inches (approximately 1.9 cm) in height, its body accented with small beads threaded onto the accompanying cord. The metal base carries the motif cleanly, and the thread cord extends to a full 16 inches (approximately 40.6 cm), keeping the overall weight to a gentle 4.68 grams on the wrist. On Raksha Bandhan, this rakhi sits beautifully against the cuff of a crisp ivory kurta or against a deeper silk bandhgala. For diaspora families celebrating at a distance, it doubles as a wearable keepsake that travels well and photographs vividly. The free-size cord accommodates most wrists without adjustment. The enamel surface, once fired, is resistant to everyday handling, and the thread requires only the usual care around water. A small piece; a considered one.
