Description

There are objects that carry a whole cosmology in miniature, and this is one of them. Rendered in sterling silver, this pendant takes the form of a small hinged box, its front face populated by a relief-carved elephant set within a field of stylised floral motifs. The elephant, long revered across Indian decorative traditions from temple jewellery of the Nagercoil belt to the repousse work of Rajasthan, here appears with the kind of composed dignity that comes from hands trained to compress meaning into very little space. The box form itself belongs to a tradition of amulet and keepsake pendants, objects that hold something precious inside as well as on their surface. At 17.2 grams, the weight is honest and present; the piece measures approximately 1.7 centimetres in height, 3.2 centimetres in width and 2.5 centimetres in length. The finish is the warm, lightly oxidised tone that allows carved sterling silver to read with clarity and depth. Pair it with a cotton mulmul kurta in ivory or blush for a languid afternoon gathering, or let it anchor a plain silk blouse beneath a Chanderi sari at a festive lunch where you wish to wear something quietly assured rather than declarative. Free size and suited to most chains, the piece sits comfortably at collarbone length. The hinged box opens and closes securely, making it as practical as it is beautiful for daily, unhurried wear.
