Description

There are waters in Indian poetry where swans do not merely swim; they carry meaning. These earrings set two swans in mirrored opposition, each pair rendered in sterling silver that has been worked into soft, sculptural relief. The swan, or hans, is among the oldest motifs in subcontinental ornament, appearing in temple friezes, Mughal manuscripts and the silver repousse traditions of Bengal and Rajasthan alike. In sterling silver of this weight, 13.5 grams across the pair, the birds carry a satisfying solidity without heaviness. The surface reads as a warm, lightly oxidised silver, allowing the feather and form detailing to emerge with depth and shadow. At 1.3 inches in height (approximately 3.3 cm), the drop is expressive without overwhelming; long enough to move gently, compact enough to remain composed. Wear these with a raw silk kurta in ivory or pale jade for a literary evening or a museum opening. They read equally well against a handloom cotton sari in indigo, where the silver catches the weft without competing with it. Sterling silver sits well on most ear types, and at free size with a standard post or hook closure, there is no adjustment required. The weight, distributed evenly across both pieces, settles easily through the day. The oxidised finish resists the flatness of high polish and ages with character rather than dullness, making these a piece one reaches for across seasons rather than occasions.
