Description

There is a particular kind of earring that does not merely hang but performs. The chandelier jhumka sits at the precise crossing point between two great traditions of Indian jewellery making. The jhumka, with its inverted dome and cascading fringe, has been beloved across Rajasthan and Bengal for centuries; the chandelier silhouette, with its tiered drops fanning outward like a temple arch, carries the architectural ambition of South Indian goldsmithing, particularly the temple-jewellery ateliers of Nagercoil. This piece brings those two vocabularies together in a copper base finished with gold plating, the warm tone mimicking the depth of traditional swarna work without the weight of solid metal. At 2.1 inches (approximately 5.3 cm) in height and 1 inch (approximately 2.5 cm) in width, the earring has genuine presence; at 16 grams the pair, it sits with confident gravity at the lobe without straining the ear over long hours. Wear this with a silk tissue kurta for a winter wedding sangeet, or pin it against a crisp Banarasi blouse at a festive reception where you want drama at the jaw rather than the throat. The gold-plated copper construction keeps the earring lightweight enough for day-long wear. Free-sized hook or post closures suit most ears without adjustment. The plating holds its lustre well when kept away from moisture and stored in a dry cloth pouch between wearings.
