Description
There are cities in Rajasthan where colour is a form of devotion, and this necklace was made in that spirit. The hasli is one of India's oldest jewellery silhouettes, a rigid torque that rests high on the collarbone, and here it arrives in sterling silver worked in the Meenakari tradition. Artisans trained in the schools of Jaipur's blue pottery and enamel craft fill the silver ground with a deep cobalt enamel, the hue that has defined the city's aesthetic for centuries. The necklace measures half an inch in height and just over five inches across (approximately 1.3 cm by 13 cm), its rigid arc shaped to follow the throat rather than hang from it. Matching drop earrings, an inch square (approximately 2.5 cm each way), carry the same ground of blue enamel framed in sterling silver borders, so the set reads as a considered whole. The combined weight of the set is ninety-one grams, substantial enough to feel purposeful on the body. Wear this set with a cream or ivory chanderi kurta for a festive afternoon gathering, where the cobalt reads almost architectural against a neutral ground. It is equally at home over a silk or cotton sari in a solid tone such as deep green or rust. The hasli is free-size in its rigid construction, fitting most necklines without adjustment. Sterling silver takes daily handling well; a soft dry cloth after each wear will keep the enamel surfaces vivid and the metal bright for years.
