Description

There are mornings when the sky over a Rajasthani salt lake holds every shade of blue at once, and this necklace belongs to that hour. Worked in sterling silver, the piece centres on a broad pendant of blue lace agate, a stone whose banded, translucent lavender-blues carry the quiet drama of still water seen from above. Around it, the silversmith has set moonstones, tanzanite and blue topaz in open-bezel and prong settings, each stone chosen for a slightly different temperature of blue, so the composition reads as a gradation rather than a repetition. The overall silhouette is a statement bib, generous at 4.5 inches (approximately 11.4 centimetres) across the pendant drop, and the finished piece weighs a substantial 79 grams, giving it the assured presence of heirloom silver rather than fashion jewellery. The finish is a burnished, lightly oxidised sterling that allows the gemstones to carry all the light without competition from the metal. Wear it over an ivory chanderi kurta for a winter wedding lunch, where the cool blues read as considered restraint rather than decoration. It is equally at home with a charcoal silk slip dress at an evening gallery opening, the tanzanite picking up the ambient low light with particular elegance. The free-size chain accommodates most necklines, and the secure box or lobster clasp closes cleanly without the need for a second pair of hands. Sterling silver at this weight wears well daily with minimal care.
