Description

There are earrings that carry an address, and these carry Madurai. Modelled on the soaring gopuram of the Meenakshi Amman Temple, each jhumka rises seven centimetres tall and spans just over three centimetres wide, its tiered silhouette echoing the stacked vimana towers that pilgrims have looked up at for centuries. Cast in brass and finished in a warm, oxidised antique tone, the surface holds its shadows in the carved recesses and catches light along the raised temple friezes, precisely as old temple gold does. The rounded jhumka bell beneath the gopuram arch swings with the easy weight of tradition. At eighty-four grams the pair has genuine presence; not costume lightness, but the considered heft of a piece made to be noticed. This is temple jewellery in its truest sense, rooted in the devotional craft vocabulary of South India, where the divine and the ornamental have never been strangers. For a Kanjivaram silk saree at a wedding reception or a festive puja gathering, these hold their own without apology. They read equally well against a deep-indigo anarkali at a heritage cultural evening, anchoring the look with quiet authority. The standard fit suits all ear sizes through a conventional hook closure. The antique brass finish is sealed against daily handling and does not require polishing. At two point seven inches in height, they make a considered statement without demanding compensation from the rest of the jewellery you choose.
