Description
There are temples in South India whose gopurams seem to grow from the earth itself, heavy with deity and time. This haram and earring set draws from that same devotional grammar. Cast in brass and finished in a deep, burnished antique tone, the necklace stands eleven and a half inches tall (approximately 29 centimetres), its layered architecture carrying the vocabulary of Temple jewellery: divine figural motifs, lotus registers, and pendant drops that echo the votive offerings hung at shrine doorways. The earrings, nearly three inches in height and just over an inch wide (approximately 7.5 by 2.9 centimetres), repeat the same language in miniature. At 223 grams, the set carries a satisfying weight that speaks to its honest brass construction, dense and warm-toned against the skin, aged deliberately to suggest heirloom provenance. This is the tradition of Nagercoil and the Coromandel temple-jewellery workshops, where ornament and offering were never entirely separate. Wear it over a raw silk Kanjivaram saree for a wedding reception, where the antique finish holds its own against the richest weaves. For a festive gathering, layer it over a deep-toned cotton kurta and let the brass do the talking. Free-sized and requiring no resizing, the necklace fastens with a standard hook closure and sits close to the collarbone in the manner of traditional harams. Brass, though not precious metal, is resilient and responds well to gentle dry polishing, keeping the antique patina intact across many wearings.
