Description

There are pieces that carry an entire night sky on the wrist. This small Bidri bracelet, centred on a single radiating star motif, belongs to the great inlay tradition of the Deccan, a craft that has been practised in Bidar for centuries and is now recognised as a Geographical Indication of Karnataka. The base metal is gunmetal, an alloy valued in Bidri precisely because it accepts a blackened, matte finish that provides the starkest possible contrast against the fine silver wire and sheet inlaid by hand into its surface. That contrast is everything: the star design emerges in bright real silver against a ground so dark it reads almost as velvet. The bracelet measures approximately 1.5 cm in height and 6.9 cm across, weighs a considered 66 grams, and sits in a rigid bangle form, free-sized to slip over the wrist with ease. Wear it alone against a white chanderi kurta and the silver star does all the speaking. Alternatively, stack it with plain oxidised silver bangles for an evening in a handwoven silk saree; the matte gunmetal surface finds a natural counterpart in the deep lustre of Banarasi or Kanjeevaram weaves. The rigid bangle silhouette requires no clasp and therefore no point of weakness. The blackened gunmetal is resistant to tarnish, the silver inlay sits flush within its channels, and the overall finish is robust enough to carry through a full day without special care.
