Transparent-Yellow Embroidered Sleeveless Jacket from Kutch with Mirrors work
Dry clean recommended. Store with natural cedar or neem leaves. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
Behind this piece
Kutch, in the westernmost reach of Gujarat, has long held a singular place in India's textile map. The mirror-work tradition here, known as shisha embroidery, is practised by Ahir, Rabari, and Mutwa communities whose women once stitched these luminous fragments into garments as portable wealth and protection. The tiny convex mirrors catch and scatter light in the manner of desert sun on salt flats. Worked on transparent yellow wool, this sleeveless jacket carries that centuries-old vocabulary into a contemporary silhouette, each mirror held firm by concentric thread scaffolding that takes patience most modern production will never afford.
How to style
Wear it over a fine ivory or off-white chanderi kurta for a festive lunch, letting the yellow read as the statement. For an evening gathering, layer it above a silk cigarette trouser in deep teal or rust, and finish with oxidised silver jhumkas that echo the metallic mirrors. At a winter wedding on the lawns, it pairs beautifully over a warm-toned bandhani dupatta draped as a stole. Ground each look with juttis in caramel leather or block-printed khusa footwear, and keep the bag understated so the embroidery does its proper work.
Fabric & care
Wool breathes and lasts generations when handled with respect. Dry-clean this jacket to preserve the tension of the shisha embroidery and prevent mirror settings from loosening. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water with a wool-specific, sulphate-free cleanser and never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat on a clean towel to dry, away from direct sunlight, which can yellow the fibres over time. Store folded in breathable muslin, not a sealed plastic bag. A cedar block nearby deters moths without chemical residue. Pressed lightly on reverse, it will hold its body beautifully for years.
