Behind this piece
Zari embroidery carries within it centuries of court patronage, most notably from the ateliers of Banaras and Surat, where gold and silver threads were woven into fabric to signal both devotion and rank. On this lehenga, the zari work traces paisley forms along the border, a motif borrowed from the Kashmiri buta and refined across Mughal textile workshops. The velvet patches that anchor each paisley panel recall the heavy embroidered borders of festive Rajasthani ghagharas. The spectrum yellow of the cotton ground brings a solar clarity that lets the metallic embroidery breathe without heaviness.
How to style
For a daytime mehendi or haldi ceremony, wear the choli fitted and let the lehenga fall unbelted, pairing it with kolhapuri flats in tan leather. For an evening sangeet, add a polki choker with uncut diamonds and block heels in gold. If you prefer a layered silhouette, drape a sheer chanderi dupatta in ivory or soft rose across one shoulder and carry a potli in matching yellow silk. The two-piece construction also allows the choli to be worn separately with cigarette trousers, extending its use well beyond the occasion it was dressed for.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton and velvet require separate consideration because each fibre behaves differently under moisture and heat. Hand wash the cotton lehenga in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. The velvet patches must never be submerged; instead, spot clean them with a barely damp cloth and allow them to air dry face down on a cotton towel. Store the garment folded along its original seam lines, wrapped in a soft muslin cloth. The zari threads are vulnerable to humidity, so silica packets inside the storage bag will extend their lustre considerably.
