Behind this piece
The phiran is Kashmir's oldest living garment, worn across centuries by men and women in the valley as protection against winters that descend fast and stay long. Cut loose and long, it was never a coat borrowed from elsewhere; it grew from the cold itself. This version is woven from pure wool, the same fibre that Kashmiri craftsmen have trusted for generations to hold warmth without weight. The hood, a practical addition rooted in mountain life, makes this phiran a garment that functions exactly as it was always meant to: honestly and completely.
How to style
Wear this phiran over a fine merino turtleneck and narrow churidar in Peat Black or Castor Gray for a winter evening that requires quiet elegance. For a more relaxed occasion, layer it over a straight-cut kurta in white cotton, allowing the phiran's volume to do the talking. Nomad and Dark Earth tones pair especially well with tan Kolhapuri sandals or suede juttis. On colder days, a handwoven wool stole in a complementary tone draped across the shoulder completes the silhouette without overcrowding it.
Fabric & care
Pure wool breathes and regulates warmth naturally, but it rewards careful handling. Hand wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, or have it dry-cleaned after the season ends. Never wring the fabric; press out water gently and dry flat on a clean surface, away from direct sunlight, which can yellow natural fibres over time. Store folded, not hung, to preserve the shoulder shape. Before storage, air the phiran thoroughly and keep it with cedar blocks to discourage moths. Treated well, pure wool deepens in character with every winter worn.
